Have We Lost or Gained Good?
I make the claim in my mission statement that we have lost more than we have gained when we strayed from the Bible and its principles. This seems like a good time to clarify my position. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. The 50s were a time of safety for me and my friends. We would think nothing about taking our bikes miles from home, without parental supervision, because every adult was considered able to speak for our parents. If we did wrong, we would be reprimanded by the nearest adult. It appeared the black community was also safe within its borders, but I knew that was not true everywhere. These things became newsworthy as I was beginning my teenage life. I grew up celebrating Christian and Jewish festivities at school and at the community center. Our town had parades where every group was represented. My favorites were the beautifully dressed Mexican horses and riders. To me they were arrayed like royalty. Our school was mixed racially and religiously, and celebrated life in its fullness together. Now I ask myself “have we lost or gained good?”.
